YOU SAID IT: Good on Danielle Smith

Here are today’s Ottawa Sun letters to the editor.

GOOD ON DANIELLE SMITH

Good for Danielle Smith to pull the sovereignty act on the federal government. And the rest of the premiers should pay close attention. She makes sense that the province knows what is in its best interests.

It’s been time for a while to address the non-production of our natural resources. And time to prepare, and plan for future inevitable climate issues, and to stop telling the people that not using plastic straws could grow hair back, and on and on.

The Ottawa gang are so busy on the other side of the world, giving our tax dollars to anyone short on cash, that they are missing our Canadian needs. When at home, they spend most time at court hearings or figuring out new ways to tax us more.

I am ready to look at more powers to the provinces. The status quo needs an overhaul.

TRUDEAU ‘DOUBLES DOWN’

The one consistency throughout Trudeau’s long seven costly years as PM has been his picking winners and losers, thereby dividing Canada. There are also many examples of Trudeau having a double standard and being hypocritical on issues.

We recall Trudeau speaking out forcibly against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s refusal to meet with protesting farmers to reach a resolve. Yet Trudeau repeatedly refused to meet with “Freedom Convoy” protesters as they requested to seek a peaceful solution. Now he is supporting protesters in China. So, according to Trudeau, the “Freedom Convoy” had no legitimacy or right to protest his COVID vaccine mandates, but protesters in China have every right to protest COVID mandates there?

Without his double standard, Trudeau would have no standard at all.

END THIS LUNACY

It cost taxpayers one-and-a-half million dollars for a three-day visit from then-Prince Charles and his bride for a three-day visit to Canada. Could we please end this lunacy? Why in the heavens are we supplementing a rich old guy who represents an archaic old institution that should have dissolved long ago?

Canada does not need to pay for some stuffy Brit with bags full of money. It’s time we grow up, become a true republic and be done with it.

DIDN’T USE ACT IN 2020

Now that the “inquiry” into invoking the Emergencies Act is complete, it is pretty clear there was no need to invoke it. Not that I’m a fan of the CBC, but on Oct. 27, 2022, Brett Forester reported on the opinion CSIS had during the rail blockades led by Indigenous people in 2020.

CSIS found the following: “Unsophisticated acts of unlawful interference (like blockades) do not cross the terrorism threshold,” the Integrated Terrorism Assessment Centre (ITAC) said in a report released through access-to-information law.

“Although these disruptive actions are damaging to the economy and to rail network operations, they have not yet amounted to acts of terrorism.”

So using the flawed “broad” definition of the act during the 2022 “Freedom Convoy” protest, why didn’t the PM and his government invoke the act then? Ah, different group, different rules.

Going through the act itself, there are penalties for not complying with the act, but none for invoking it unnecessarily.

The Liberal government may think it has us all fooled but it’s just the Kool-Aid-drinking believers who think they did nothing wrong. Too bad this will all be forgotten by the next election.
