What the City of Ottawa calls a “motor vehicle control zone” went into effect Wednesday morning around Parliament Hill, and lasts through the Canada Day long weekend with a planned end on Monday morning.

Roads in the area — Wellington Street to Laurier Avenue from Booth Street to Colonel By and Sussex drives — are not closed, the city said. Residential and business traffic is allowed in the “control zone” alongside people on foot or bike and taking public transit.

“Motor vehicles taking part in any form of demonstration, event, protest or rally will not be permitted,” city hall said.

It’s part of the City of Ottawa’s plan, with the Ottawa Police Service, to manage what’s expected to be both bigger-than-usual crowds at a return of in-person Canada Day celebrations and a string of “freedom movement” events.

Barricades, heavy equipment, or police officers and their vehicles, will be stationed at access points around the zone, to “filter lawful traffic” onto those streets, the city said.

The on-street parking or stopping areas are marked by signage. The only parking permitted in the control zone is in garages or parking lots.

Motorists who defy no-stopping signage may be ticketed and towed.

“Expect traffic delays in the control zone and on surrounding roads,” city hall said.

“The removal of the control zone, currently planned for Monday, July 4 at 6 a.m., may be delayed should conditions warrant it.”

On Canada Day, the City of Ottawa also has road closures in effect  for community events around the city while Canadian Heritage plans street closures for activities at LeBreton Flats Park, Place des festivals Zibi and Parliament Hill.
