The Syndicat des professeurs et professeures de l’Université Laval (SPUL), which represents 1,280 teachers, voted Thursday in favour of a strike to begin March 13, the union confirmed on its Facebook page. They had voted 96 per cent in favour of a strike on Jan. 20.

The most recent collective agreement for SPUL members expired on Dec. 1. Negotiations to renew the agreement began Sept. 1.

Better distribution of positions, increasing administrative support and better work-life balance are among the SPUL’s contract demands.

University rector Sophie D’Amours said she was “disappointed” in the union’s decision, but “we will take the opportunity to give a chance to negotiations and continue forward,” she said, in reference to a pause in pressure tactics during spring break next week.

D’Amours said several solutions to the issues brought up by the professors were put forward at the negotiating table and were “judged acceptable” by both parties.

She said the school “does not have the revenues of other Canadian universities” and is “negotiating the working conditions in our context, in Quebec, based on our capacity to pay.”
