This B.C. girl was making the most of the fall colors. Then a bear attacked. Now she’s in the ICU

In the intense care unit at the Royal Alexandra Clinic in Edmonton, Gary Hansen sits by the bed of his wife, Leosette [Cheng] Canoy, telling her, “We love you. Hold on.”

He can not hold his wife’s hand because her arms are also badly mauled from a bear attack.

She is sedated and on a ventilator after undergoing more than 6 several hours of surgery for accidents to her arms, head, back again, and ear.

“She’s my present from God. It’s horrific to see my wife like that. The bear chewed her up bad.”

Canoy and her mate, Analyn Shurtliff Bartolome, were critically hurt by a male black bear who billed them on a strolling trail close to Dawson Creek, B.C., on Monday.

Canoy’s niece, Wenneli Canoy, who was on the walk but wasn’t hurt, claimed her aunt was attacked when she rushed to the aid of her good friend.

Bartolome’s teenage son was also hurt attempting to fend off the bear. He and Canoy’s niece were eventually ready to achieve basic safety and connect with 911.

With darkness coming on, police say two RCMP officers in an all-terrain car or truck discovered the two women lying in the bush with life-threatening accidents.

Canoy was medevaced to a clinic in Edmonton, almost 600 kilometres away.

She emigrated to Canada from the Philippines about 15 years in the past, and he says, fell in like with the Canadian wilderness.

He said his spouse loves hiking and camping, and the few typically goes quadding in the area.

He explained the group established out on the going for walks path Monday “searching for good places to get drop pictures with the autumn leaves.”

In a write-up on social media, a spouse and children good friend of Bartolome, the 2nd sufferer, states she is in ICU in Vancouver and has severe arm accidents.

The post states Bartolome is a wife and mother of two teenage children and operates really hard to guidance her family members.

Dawson Creek’s shut-knit Filipino community and area organizations are rallying to aid the women and support carry Canoy’s mom and nephew to her bedside from the Philippines.

A Dawson creek trucking organization donated $500.

“We have a large Filipino community listed here, and I have some Filipino persons performing for my organization. I just requested them how I could enable. They’re truly likely to require some enable,” explained Neil Norman of Reg Norman Trucking

Hansen says he’ll be by his wife’s side for the extended recovery.

“We reside in Canada listed here, and we hear about bear assaults, but we under no circumstances consider it is gonna be us, you know? And now right here it is with my spouse and children, and it really is been a horrible ordeal. I am overcome.”
