N.L. lady survives Fiona storm surge

Jocelyn Gillam was underwater, pinned underneath a Jeep, as post-tropical storm Fiona battered the coastal town of Port aux Basques, N.L.

Gillam, who life in the city that was devastated Saturday by the storm, with homes pulled out to sea, power knocked out and communities destroyed, advised CTV Information Channel on Monday she’s grateful she survived to convey to her tale.

She was out surveying the hurt and appeared out to the ocean. “Fiona was coming, she was coming with a vengeance, and I didn’t consider she was heading to come that significantly in,” she said.

“She knocked me on my rear and pushed me under the Jeep,” she claimed. Gillam held on to the bar beneath the auto.

She told CTV Nationwide News correspondent Adrian Ghobrial that there was a manhole that was sucking water inas she struggled to maintain on. The drive of the h2o was pulling Gillam down so her leg was pinned in the gap.

“I was just taking in water…and I closed my mouth due to the fact I didn’t want too considerably h2o. But I experienced to scream, and it was so cold and so salty,” she mentioned.

Her brother-in-legislation noticed Gillam beingswept less than the vehicle and yelled for neighbours to assistance and they did.

Gillam is not the only resident to have been knocked over by the storm surge Saturday. An elderly lady in Port aux Basques died following she was swept out to sea.
