Helen Walkley wins $10,000 Lola Award for choreography

The Dance Centre has announced that Helen Walkley is the recipient of the Lola Award.

The $10,000 award was founded in memory of local choreographer Lola MacLaughlin, and is presented every two years to a mid-career/senior level choreographer.

Walkley is a Vancouver-based dancer, choreographer, and teacher who has also lived and worked extensively in the Netherlands, Germany, and United States. Her most recent project was John, a memoir of her lost brother, which was performed at the Firehall Arts Centre in January.

“This award acknowledges a body of outstanding work which spans more than 30 years,” says Dance Centre executive director Mirna Zagar in a news release, “and in particular, Helen’s approach to contemporary dance which is fuelled by her unique improvisational mind and dedication to exploring somatic practices.

“In addition to her continually evolving and innovative choreography,” adds Zagar, “she brings so much to our community as a teacher and mentor, and I am thrilled that her unique contribution has been recognized.”
