Grieve, Henry take first-round leads in Saskatchewan Amateur golf championships


Prince Albert’s Brett Henry fired a three-under 68 (33-35) Tuesday to stake out an opening-round lead in the Saskatchewan Men’s Amateur at Cooke Municipal.

Saskatoon’s Sarah Grieve holds a one-shot lead over the field at the 2022 Saskatchewan Amateur women’s golf championship at the Prince Albert Cooke Municipal Golf Course.

Grieve carded a score of 80 (39-41), which was one stroke better than both Emily Cornwall (41-40—81) of the Springbank Links Golf Course and Autumn Neizner (41-40—81) of Regina’s Wascana Country Club.

Parkland’s Chelsea Kinoshita sits in fourth place after an opening-round score of 82 (40-42)n Tuesday.

Symone Ripley of the Saskatoon Golf and Country club is three strokes back of Kinosita after shooting an 85 (41-44).

Shellbrook’s Brooklin Fry — who won the Saskatchewan Amateur women’s title in 2020 and Saskatchewan Junior women’s crown in 2021, 2020 and 2018 — finds herself six shots back of the leader, Grieve, after a first-round score of 86 (43-43).

Henry takes lead in Men’s Amateur

Prince Albert’s Brett Henry fired a three-under 68 (33-35) Tuesday to stake out an opening-round lead in the Saskatchewan Men’s Amateur at Cooke Municipal.

Henry’s scorecard included seven birdies and four bogeys.

Defending champion Roman Timmerman (36-33—69) of Saskatoon and Prince Albert’s Cole Jenkins (35-34—69) are both one stroke off the pace.

Three-time defending Mid-Am champion Danny Klughart (34-37) of Prince Albert and Kyle Wiebe (36-35) next after a first round score of 71.

Waskesiu’s Alex Swinnerton, Prince Albert’s Martin Ring and Birch Hills’ Jeff Whitfield are tied for sixth, each with a 72.
