BETTING: Picks for the PGA Tour’s Shriners Children Open

Article content

The PGA Tour fall season is ramping up with the second of eight straight events. This week the players are at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas for the Shriners Children Open. Three of the past four years at this event the winner been -20 or lower, so if you’re looking to make a bet, make sure you are finding guys who know how to take it deep.

Before we get into it, let’s look back at last week’s picks, because well, you know…

Article content

Davis Riley +3000: T19
Sahith Theegala +2000: MC
Adam Svensson +7000: T54

Now, on to this week’s picks:

The two top favourites are Patrick Cantlay +650 and Sungjae Im +1100. I’m not taking either player. I don’t want anyone in a full field PGA Tour event at 6/1 odds unless his name is Tiger Woods and it’s the year 2000. And although I love the player, I saw enough bad things in person with Sungjae Im’s putting at the Presidents Cup to keep me away from him at 11/1.

Cam Davis +4500
We are banking on this Aussie bomber enjoying his first taste of the Presidents Cup limelight and building on it in the near future. In Saturday four balls at Quail Hollow, alongside his childhood hero Adam Scott, he went eagle-birdie-birdie to beat Sam Burns and Billy Horschel. He’ll need plenty of birdies and few eagles this week to win, and I think he can get it done.

Si Woo Kim +4500
This former Players champion shushed the crowd at Quail Hollow while taking down Justin Thomas on Sunday at the Presidents Cup. If that’s not enough reason to take him this week, it should be. He also has a had good results in the fall before with two top tens last year and two top 15s at the Shriners in the past four years.

Adam Hadwin +4500
This is where we get back on our Presidents Cup revenge tour. Last week it was Mackenzie Hughes making sure Trevor Immelman saw exactly what he missed out on by overlooking the Dundas, Ont. native for a captain’s pick. This week, we like Adam Hadwin’s chances of sending a message of his own. Hadwin has played good golf since last year’s Players Championship, so why not go for back-to-back Canucks to win? I covered the Shriners in 2019 when Hadwin finished T4, and he came T6 last year. At 45/1 he’s a no-brainer this week.

Lucas Herbert +6000
Presidents Cup revenge tour Part 2. Immelman took Aussie Cam Davis over Aussie Lucas Herbert as a captain’s pick. Davis is a bomber while Herbert led the PGA Tour in strokes gained putting last season. It’s Herbert’s first PGA Tour start of the season but he had a T5 finish a couple weeks ago on the DP World Tour at the Italian Open. You need to pour in birdie putts to win in Vegas this week, and Herbert knows how to do that.
