Alberta actors, films and shows recognized at Rosie awards

With two nominations in his pocket for best performance by an Alberta actor, Shaun Johnson took home the award at the Alberta Film and Television Awards Saturday night. He won for his role in the short film Theft by Tapped Potential Films but he had also been nominated for an episode of the long-running family drama Heartland in which he plays the curmudgeonly patriarch Jack Bartlett.

The best performance by an Alberta female actor went to Helen Belay for her role in an episode of the Abracadavers TV series.

The best scripted series or mini-series award (which used to be two categories, best dramatic show and best comedy) went to the TV show Jann for its episode entitled No Drama.

The best unscripted series went to Rodeo Nation for its episode Stick With It. This documentary series follows five Indigenous rodeo riders hoping to win big at the Indian National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

The best scripted feature, made-for-TV movie, made-for-OTT or specialty cable networks went to Before I Change My Mind. At Sundance 2020, the script for the coming-of-age, gender-questioning film was named to The GLAAD List: a curated list of the 10 most promising LGBTQ+inclusive screenplays in Hollywood.

The Rosies, as they’re called, held two ceremonies Saturday – an afternoon one for class entries and an evening one for craft.

Several individuals won two awards or more, including Larry Day and Holly Fortier for best director unscripted over 30 minutes, and for their show Ayoungman as the best unscripted production over 30 minutes. Johnny Blerot also won two awardsbest overall sound unscripted under 30 minutes (The Wop May Story) and unscripted over 30 minutes (The Musical Animal). Scott Westby won three awards – for best director scripted over 30 minutes (Jonesin’), best production (Genice), and best web series ( Opera Labs)

Tom Jackson, best host for Huron Carole 2021’s Angels Without Wings.

• Edmonton Journal arts writer Fish Griwkowsky together with filmmaker Trevor Anderson co-won the best screenwriter (scripted over 30 minutes) award for Before I Change My Mind, which is screening at the Calgary International Film Festival on Sept. 25 at 3:30 p.m. and Oct. 2 at 11:15 a.m. (Eau Claire cinemas)

Matt Prazak won the best screenwriter (scripted under 30 minutes), for the short film Theft.

• Best musical or variety program or series went to Calgary’s Naughty … but Nice Vaccin8 by Roadwest Pictures and Forte Musical Theatre.

Several Alberta productions scooped up multiple awards at the Alberta Film and Television Awards, including

Before I Change My Mind: best scripted feature, made for TV movie or made for OTT or specialty cable networks; best screenwriter scripted over 30 minutes, best cinematographer scripted over 30 minutes (Wes Miron)

Piita Aapasskaan: best director (unscripted under 30 minutes ( Brock Davis Mitchell); best unscripted production under 30 minutes; and best cinematographer unscripted under 30 minutes (Braden Dereniwski & Brock David Mitchell)

Rodeo Nation for best unscripted series; and best editor unscripted under 30 minutes (Sarah Taylor and Weyme Teeter)

The full list of winners will be released on the AMPIA website following the ceremony.
