Air Canada passengers deplaned over masking ‘non-compliance’

Air Canada is asserting that 25 passengers were deplaned on a flight this week over masking violations.

“Our general policy is to not discuss incidents of disruptive behaviour on board our aircraft, but we can confirm the deplaning of passengers from flight AC866 on June 20 was related to non-compliance with Canadian government mask regulations, Canadian Aviation Regulations, as well as directives of our crew. The actions taken were for the safety and benefit of the other 266 passengers on the flight,” the airline said in a statement Thursday.

“We regret that some customers who were not involved were unfortunately deplaned. We have since reached out those we have identified as mistakenly removed to apologize and address their concerns.”

Air Canada ordered 25 passengers off the plane at Montreal Trudeau International Airport in the early hours Tuesday. The flight was to London.

Some of the passengers aboard the flight, AC 866, voiced their dissatisfaction on social media.

Among the passengers who said to be deplaned were a young family of four and a pregnant woman. An older couple was also said to be among the removed passengers, according to tweets by their son, Patrick Brailey.

Brailey alleged they were not allowed to fly Air Canada for 24 hours and “any future travel is their responsibility as they were off-loaded.” They rebooked for £1,300 with Air Transat, Brailey said.
